Mrs. Doloughty’s Last Day Is April 20th

Hi Folks,

Mrs. Doloughty will finish her internship next Friday.  I have a little gift from the class to give to her and we will have a celebration Friday with root beer floats.  If you would like, you may send in an item to be added to a teacher survival kit for Mrs. Doloughty.  Items for the survival kit could be practical like a picture book, note paper, pencils etc., or they could be humorous like a bottle of Tums!  There is no pressure to participate.  Thank you in advance.

Spring Updates

-  Our Monday trip to see Jason and the Augernauts at the Flynn was wonderful.  The performance was educational and entertaining!  The students were great.

-  A trip with Mrs. Buswell’s class to Fort Ticonderoga has been tentatively scheduled for May 24th!  There is no limit to the number of chaperones who may join us.  (Please remeber chaperones must complete the chaperone paperwork in advance.)  Details will follow, but please mark your calendar.

-  Students are reading biographies in class and taking notes.  Students may choose from two projects to complete.  Details went home last week, and extra copies are available.  Projects are due by April 16th.

- The annual fifth grade talent show will be on the last day of school.  An informationa form has been sent home.  Students wishing to participate must return their form by April 5th.

Absence…again

I am sorry to be out again.  I had a planned procedure Thursday afternoon at Dartmouth Hitchcock that ended up being more involved, but should help with my recurrent pancreatitis.  I am home now and I can’t wait to return to school(probably Wednesday).  Thank you to Mrs. Doloughty for teaching in my place!

Celebrations

Thank you to the students who shared Valentine’s Day cards and thank you to all who sent treats to share!  The students were really excited and enjoyed a little “down” time at the end of the day.

On Friday, February 24 the class will end the day with a video and popcorn to celebrate meeting the class goal of transitioning to and from specials quietly.  (Mrs. Doloughty even taught the students how to “square” the halls!)

Valentine’s Day

I have had a number of questions regarding Valentine’s Day.  On Valentine’s Day we will close the day with an opportunity for students to make Valentine’s Day cards for their families.  Students may bring Valentine’s Day cards to share, but only if they have cards for all of the students in our class.  If a family wishes to send a treat to share they are welcome to, but ALL treats to be shared must be cleared with the nurse due to allergies.  Thank you.

Language:

-During reading workshop Mrs. Doloughty and I have been focusing on the comprehension skill of determining importance.  The work is rich and I truly believe that it helps students to be more efficient and successful readers.  Daybooks are also used to reinforce the instruction.  Finally, students continue to read assigned books at their instructional level in addition to choice reading.

-This week Fountas and Pinnell reading assessments will be completed.

-In writing we will begin an exploration of narrative writing.  Narrative writing can be challenging as it is difficult to maintain a tight focus, but narrative writing also allows for a great deal of choice an creativity.

Math:

The unit seven assessment will be administered on Tuesday.  This assessment is pretty tough as it includes the order of operations and negative numbers.  We will spend Monday’s math class providing a general review and a targeted skill review for identified students needing specific extra support.

Science & Social Studies:

Students presented their Revolutionary War research projects.  Projects included Power Point presentations, books for children, newspapers and even an original song and performance on guitar by Leah!  A special thanks goes to Mrs. Doloughty for keeping students on task and on time with their projects.  On Monday, our class will return to Mrs. Buswell for science to begin the Mysterious Powders unit.

Absence

Dear Families,

I am having gallbladder surgery and will be out for a few days.  Fortunately, Ms. Doloughty will take over for me and keep our program on track.  Thank you Ms. Doloughty!

Sincerely,

This Week…

This week at school we got new books. The books are called A Dogs Life, Fair Weather, Lights, Camera, Amalee, and The Tale of Despereaux.  This time the kids got to decide the schedule and how many pages were read.

This week at school the class did FQR’s ( Facts, Questions, and Response) and we read about Polar Bears and the Olympics. To do an FQR you have to read an article then write a Fact, Question, and Response. The class learned a whole lot about Polar Bears and the Olympics!

In social studies we started learning about the Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary war was about Great Britain and the Colonies fighting each other.

Excited to be here

Greetings,

I’m a new addition to the everyday classroom community in Mr. Winchester’s room. My name is Vanessa Doloughty and I am currently a student at Saint Michael’s College enrolled in the Licensure Program to become an Elementary teacher. I live in Colchester with my husband and two kids. We moved here four years ago from Hawaii and are thoroughly enjoying the four seasons here.

I am excited to be in this classroom and work with your child. Feel free to drop in and say hello.
