Quick Update

I just wanted to update you on the activities in our classroom.  We have not done Spelling for the last couple of weeks and will not do it for the next two or three weeks.  We have already completed the spelling expectations for 5th grade.  At this point, we are spending more time on writing where the students are practicing the Spelling skills that they have learned.  Last week the students completed personal narratives and starting this week the students will do a unit on writing mysteries with Ms. Kelley.

In reading, the students are enjoying the mysteries that they are reading.  We are having great discussions in our Guided Reading Groups around mysteries, clues, suspects, and Red Herrings.

We are just about finished with Unit 9 in math.  The test is scheduled for Thursday.  We will be reviewing on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In Science, the students are very excited about the Ecosystem Unit even though we have more than the normal amount of fish die.  We will be getting more fish on Tuesday and we are expecting that they will be healthier.  This week the students will be writing poems with their science partners about Ecosystems and if all goes well, we will be using a computer program called Photostory to record their poems and images that they students have chosen.  Next week, we will be studying about the Chesapeake Bay watershed and the students will be learning about pollution from the point of view of farmers, factory workers, or  ordinary citizens.  Then the students will be teaching their classmates about what they have learned.  We’ll wrap up the unit with a debate about cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay on Young Writers.

As you can see the “Rock ‘N Roll Rogers’s” are very busy!!  As always please contact me with questions or concerns.
