A huge thank you for all the goodies and gifts that came to school all week for Teacher Appreciation week. Our luncheon today was so nice; beautiful setting, thoughtful gifts and delicious food. UMS is a wonderful place to work. We have the best students and families! We all feel so appreciated.

To end Spirit Week we wore our pajamas to school today and had a picnic lunch out on the playground. We picked up our bag lunches and milks in the cafeteria and sat outside to eat our lunches. It was a bit chilly, but everyone loved it! After lunch we explored many different literacy and math games on the laptop computers.
Have a great vacation week! See you back here on Monday, April 30th. (May 1st is Voting Day!)

The Smoothie cart will be at Union Memorial School the week of April 30-May 4. Students who purchase or receive a lunch will get a fresh made smoothie as part of their lunch all week long.
Students and Families are invited to attend our Red Clover event this Thursday evening at 6:30 here at UMS. Please join us to participate in these fun literacy based activities! We will all participate in two of the many activities in the afternoon, but there are more to enjoy!
Last week we read Lois Ehlert books and looked at her illustration style. It is similar to Eric Carle in that she uses paper to cut out the parts of her illustrations and pieces them together. Students used scraps of construction paper instead of community paper. You will see students working on their illustrations in the slideshow below.

Watch the slide show to see your children creating the covers of their All About Books using the technique of Eric Carle. Last week we used paint to make community paper. Here you will see them cut out and glue together pictures for their books. After making the books we sat together with partners and read our books to each other and then exchanged partners and read again. Children took their books home on Monday of this week. Enjoy!

We have started an author study of Eric Carle and have read several books already. We noticed the way Eric Carle illustrated his books and have made our own community paper using several different colors of paint and many different tools to paint with. Some of these tools were; toothbrushes, scrub brushes, kitchen tools, combs, material and sponge rollers. We will use this community paper to make our own illustrations in the very near future.

A newsletter is being sent home today in your child’s green folder. Please see the Newsletter page of this blog for a copy of today’s letter.
It includes information about upcoming dates, and tells about our Five Senses Unit.
Have a restful, healthy vacation. See you all at parent conferences on the 6th or 7th of March.
We had a great time on our 100th day of school. When we arrived this morning all our numbers from our 100 chart were missing and everyone helped to find them and put them back in the chart in the correct positions. We read books about the 100th day of school, sang songs, created a 100′s trail mix with a total of 1800 pieces!
During our celebration we chose from different activities around the room as seen in the slideshow below. Thanks for all the wonderful donations! Next Tuesday – Valentine’s Day party – 2:00-3:00.
