Cure Diabetes

Uncategorized  Tagged , No Comments »

We love our Cure Diabetes bracelets!

In June, the students in Mrs. Davis’ second grade class were recognized for the help they gave a classmate with diabetes during the year.

They were respectful on the numerous occasions I came into the classroom to see the student, check a blood glucose or give an injection of insulin.  They were patient when they let their friend choose his food first during classroom celebrations so we could calculate his carbs and he could get insulin.  They were helpful when they took turns walking him to my office at the end of each day.

A donation was made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in honor of Mrs. Davis’ class and the students and teachers received Cure Diabetes bracelets.  Great job kids!!!

Egg Safety

Uncategorized  Tagged , No Comments »

First grade students are learning about embryology by hatching chicks.  I helped prepare the eggs for placement in the incubators (special warmers)  and spoke with the students about keeping the eggs and themselves safe.  The eggs are turned a few times a day to help the chicks’  bodies develop evenly. In nature, the mother hen turns the eggs and keeps them warm.

The students learned they needed to wash their hands before and after turning the eggs to prevent germs from being passed between themselves and the eggs/developing chicks.  We reviewed the hand washing steps too.

Science is great!

Snapshots of the health office

Uncategorized  Tagged 2 Comments »

Students in kindergarten and grade 1 had their vision and hearing checked earlier this school year. Grade 2 students were checked if their parents or teachers had concerns about their ability to see or hear.

The hearing screening involves wearing “old fashioned” headphones and listening to beeps.

The vision screening involves covering one eye (like my two friends in the picture) and identifying pictures or letters.

Students, thank you for doing a great job!

Parents, if I had concerns about your child’s screening results, I would have contacted you and recommended you discuss the vision and hearing results with your child’s health care provider.
