2012 NAEA National Convention in NYC

March 6th, 2012 by · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

Welcome back from February break! I had a very exciting break. I spent part of it in New York City at the National Art Education Association’s annual convention. Over 7,000 art teachers from all over the country attended workshops, sessions, listened to speakers and had full access to NYC’s most prestigious museums! My head is still spinning :)

I could go on and on about  my trip, however a highlight I wanted to share, was listening to Chuck Close speak about his remarkable life as a world renowned artist. This week I will share with all of my classes this experience in more detail.

Below, is a photo taken during his presentation. You might notice something right away. Chuck is a paraplegic and hasn’t walked is over two decades.

Chuck may not be able to hold a glass of water but he can paint this!!!!

This is a self portrait, painted acrylic on canvas. This is NOT a photograph. This style of painting is known as photo realism. In class we will watch a short film on how he holds and manipulates a paint brush!

Check out his newest style of painting below.

How has his style of painting changed? How is it still the same?

Let’s check in and answer some of these questions in class this week! Enjoy your last day of break!

Timbre: a Variation in Color and Integrative Math Project

January 13th, 2012 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

3rd grade and 5th grade artists in my art enrichment group have been collaboratively painting a wall mural known as a timbre (tam-ber). Timbre, typically used in musical terms, means “variation in colors”. Basically we are creating large color grid. The mural is located in the Lighthouse corridor, leading out to the playground.

When finished, the entire Osprey community will have access to connecting math curriculum that I am developing. This timbre will help students with turning numbers into decimals, fractions, and percentages. For example, students will count all squares, then asked, how many are yellow? turn that into a fraction, etc.
