Foot Prints to Fitness on the Long Trail

Posted on May 17th, 2012 in Uncategorized by huntbc

Malletts Bay School students and staff really know the meaning of putting one foot in front of the other as they undertake the annual  Long Trail Walk-Run.  For thirty-two years the MBS family has been walking and running their way to physical fitness on the Fitness Challenge Course via the Long Trail.  Each day they walk and/or run a quarter mile course during recess, physical education and designated times by their classroom teacher.  In a team building-type effort they add their class laps together and determine the miles they have completed.  They then chart their way along Vermont’s Long Trail to complete the 272 miles.  Vermont’s Long Trail is a hiking trail that meanders its way through Vermont from the Massachusetts border to the Canadian border (see the map).  The Green Mountain Club is the caretaker and steward for the Long Trail.  Check out their website by clicking to the right under For Everyone, Vermont Long Trail.  Don’t miss  their new program called Long Trail Bound on the website.

Alex Frank Sets New Endurance Run Record

Posted on May 17th, 2012 in Uncategorized by huntbc

Alex Frank, in Mr. Galati’s  fifth grade class, set a new record for the 11 year old boys Endurance Run.  Colchester has a graduated run to assess heart-lung endurance for the Fitness Challenge.  By that we mean that as you get older the distance increases until age 12.  The breakdown is as follows: 6 and 7 year olds run a quarter of a mile, 8 and 9 years olds do a half a mile, 10 and 11 year olds run three quarters of a mile and 12 and up complete a mile.  The previous record was held since 2005 by Brendan Copley a Colchester High School cross country runner, track and nordic ski standout.  Eleven year old Alex beat the record time by one second with an amazing  time of 4 minutes and 26 seconds.  Congratulations Alex!  By the way Alex will receive one of the MBS Extreme Physical Fitness Awards.  To receive this you must earn the outstanding (exceeds the standards) level in all four components during the three years you are at Malletts Bay School.

Fitness Challenge

The astonishing weather that we have been having has allowed us to really move ahead with the Physical Fitness Challenge.  Thus far we have completed the sit ups, sit and reach and flexed arm hang.  We will be doing the Fitness Run this week with make-ups just after the Spring Break.  The students have really been putting their best foot forward with the test.
Just a reminder to students to make sure they have the proper footwear for the run and all P.E. activities.   With the great weather we have been having it can be easy to forget the running shoes.  Check the page on the blog labeled Dress for proper footwear.

Physical Fitness Challenge Is Underway

Posted on April 2nd, 2012 in Uncategorized by huntbc

The Physical Fitness Challenge will be in full swing this week with the first two assessments.  The sit-ups and sit and reach will be the two test components.  The sit-ups will assess abdominal muscle strength and endurance.  The sit and reach will measure the flexibility of their hamstrings, lower back muscles and hip joint.  While students are taking this assessment the other students will participate in activity stations of scooters/sit and reach, basketball, four square and jumping with hula hoops and jump ropes.  Students scores will be recorded on their personal fitness card that will follow them through grade 8.   At the end of the assessment a personal report of your child’s scores will be sent home.  Certficates will be awarded to all students according to achievement level….bronze, silver and gold.  Students who achieve the gold level for all four components during the three years that they are at MBS receive the Extreme Physical Fitness Certificate.

Welcome Back!

Posted on March 7th, 2012 in Uncategorized by huntbc

Welcome back!    Whether you enjoyed Vermont and all it has to offer or traveled to places afar I hope that you had a wonderful winter break.  It looks like we will really “spring” forward during this coming week with four out the the next six days with temperatures reaching into the 50′s.

During the next few weeks we will  be participating in dance.  We will be looking at the many ways that dances helps us in other parts of our life.  Each class we will warm up with a variety of dances to develop different movement skills.  Students will then work in small groups to create their own dance through a variety of different movement concepts.  This choreographed dance will be put to appropriate music of their choice.  The third graders will develop their dance with opening and closing shapes as well as with different locomotor (walk, slide, skip, hop, etc.) and non-locomotor (bend, twist, sway, stretch, etc.) movements.  The dance creations of the fourth and fifth graders will have the opening and closing shapes with movements sandwiched in-between the shapes that demonstrate different pathways, directions and levels of movement. I am always amazed at how creative our students are and how they interpret the music with their own movements.  Working together, sharing  ideas, compromising  and appreciating the work of others is an important part of the MBS dance experience.  On a daily basis students will use a dance rubric where they evaluate the work of their group for the day.  So let the dancing begin!
