Hi all – We’ve had a good week!
Reading – Students are working in 4 book groups reading a variety of titles. They are focusing on the characters of the stories. Ask them for a summary of what they have read so far.
Writing: We are working to complete the 4 spring assessment pieces. They have written narratives, and response to literary and informational literature. We have reports next!
Math : We are working with 3-D shapes with a focus on finding the volume. Ask about the cubic meter and how many students fit inside! They are also working with weights in metrics and standard units of measure i.e. pounds, ounces, grams, kilograms…
Science: We have been practicing for the NECAP assessment. Students have worked in groups to complete a variety of experiments, complete follow up questions and compare their answers with state sample work.
Students have a permission slip for the Shelburne Museum trip in their Friday folders.
Have a fun weekend. Get outside for Green-up Day!!!!!

We had a very interesting presentation today on camouflage. Ask your child to explain the two outside (in the rain) activities – finding worms and locating hidden items. Can you find the two insects in each of the photos below? Also ask about the colors of birds and fish……..

We explored erosion right here in the backyard of MBS this afternoon. Planted seeds in the stream tables to experiment with erosion next week.

USA National Hockey team visit was a lot of fun! Each players shared a message about the importance of doing well in school, setting goals, having fun and being good to friends and family. Go USA!!!!
We had a Four Winds Presentation last week on building nests. Students worked in groups to identify which nest belonged to which birds, as well as designing their own nests.
Students have been working in small groups completing experiments related to land and water. Ask them to share what they have been learning. Tomorrow we have some IBM engineers coming in to the class to complete an experiment related to water.
We completed our biography unit last week. Students read about a variety of people and shared their new learning with the class. They each also wrote an autobiography and shared it with classmates for comments. You can ask you child to share theirs. (They are on the class writing blog).
Our reading focus for the next few weeks will be on nonfiction science stories. They have selected some great topics to read about.

It’s 5:25. My daughter Erica just called from UVM with an exciting offer – the USA Women’s National Hockey team will be in town tomorrow for the National Hockey Tournament. About 10 of the hockey players have offered to visit our school around lunch time – may also go around the building and visit classes. Exciting!!!!! Media might be with them! Might be fun if as many students as possible either wear red, white and blue or a hockey jersey. I know that this is a last minute plan…… if you have any friends to call and encourage them to wear red, white and blue, too!!!!!! Thanks!

They were so creative in the crafts they designed, they shared materials and ideas, they were passionate about the goals, were on BEST behavior during set up and sale time….. I could not be more pleased!!!!! They raised $481.00 – enough to adopt 4 acres of rain forests, plant 80 trees and adopt 8 polar bears!!!!! Thank you for all of your support!
