Questions to Ask Readers – Fiction

Filed under: Literacy, Uncategorized on Sunday, January 22nd, 2012 by | No Comments

Comprehension is the understanding and interpretation of what is read. To be able to accurately understand written material, children need to be able to (1) decode what they read; (2) make connections between what they read and what they already know; and (3) think deeply about what they have read. How did the writer help you know …?

Readers who have strong comprehension are able to draw conclusions about what they read – what is important, what is a fact, what caused an event to happen, which characters are funny. Thus comprehension involves combining reading with thinking and reasoning.
When reading together with your child or after they have read to themselves, see if you can come up with a question that will help them think more deeply about what they have read.  Below are some questions to ask readers about the text.
  • How did the writer show you what kind of person ‘the character’ was?
  • How did the writer show what ‘the character’ was like even though s/he wasn’t in the story?
  • The writer was showing how ‘the character’ learned a lesson. What was the important lesson ‘the character’ learned?
  • When did ‘the character start to change her/his mind?
  • This book had different kinds of writing in it. What were the different kinds of writing?
  • Do you think what happened in this story could really happen?
