There is a new “Welcome to Kindergarten” section on our website for incoming kindergarten students.  It includes video clips of the various faculty members the students will encounter in their first year at UMS.  There is a short welcome from me and each kindergarten teacher introduces herself and then gives a virtual tour of her classroom.  There is also a segment highlighting the specialists and Mrs. Phllips, my administrative assistant.  If your child will be starting kindergarten this fall, I hope you take the time to visit the section by clicking here.

I enjoyed participating in the skits that kicked off the Red Clover activities of 2012.  I was Nabeel from Nabeel’s New Pants by Proiti Roy and Fawzia Gilani-Williams.

My awesome staff nominated me for the Henry Giauque Vermont Elementary Principal of the Year awarad and I won!  This is an incredible honor and I am very touched by their respect and support.  Thank you!!!

Owen and I played a game of chess with a chess set he made with his brother and father.  It was so much fun playing with the LEGO Star Wars pieces.  Thank you, Owen.

I love math!  I also loved collecting all of the state quarters when they came out a few years back.  This afternoon I helped Jacob and Caleb, two first graders, count how much money one would have if they owned one of each of the state quarters.  Can you figure it out?

I am so proud of the students and all of the books they read over the winter recess.  I really enjoyed reading some of my favorite picture books to them:

• Kindergarten – Fortunately by Remy Charlip
• First Grade – The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka
• Second Grade – Mudball by Matt Travares

We had a great time at the family skate.  It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.

I hope to see you at the family skate Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Essex Ice Arena.  Remember, you had to preregister and this is a family event, not a drop-off.

The PTO is in need of help!  We understand making the monthly meetings is a hard commitment for some people.  You can still help out by volunteering in a way that fits your schedule.  Specifically, we need help cutting and counting the Box Tops and laying out the yearbook.  If you are able to help, please contact Sally Cusack, co-president, at 881-2421 or umspto@gmail.com.
